District Information

Northfield is a suburban community located on the mainland near the New Jersey shore between Atlantic City and Ocean City, and between Pleasantville and Linwood on U.S. Route 9. It has an area of 3.5 square miles and is nearly square in shape with a population of 8,600 in 2015. We are organized as a city, with a mayor and city council. Our school system is a Type II district with nine elected school board members.

 

Main roads leading to Atlantic City, New York, Philadelphia and Washington are easily accessible. By car it takes 20 minutes to reach Atlantic City, 2-1/2 hours to go to New York, Philadelphia is 1-1/2 hours away and Washington only 3 hours using the Cape May ferry.

We have approximately 1,000 pupils, grades PK-8, housed in one building located on a site of 11.58 acres. Although we are located in one building, we have designated the downstairs of the building as the Northfield Community Elementary School for grades PK-4 and the upstairs of the building as the Northfield Community Middle School for grades 5-8.

In January of 1998 the district replaced its previous four schools with a new 18 million-dollar state-of-the-art high tech facility. The school features a high speed network with full wireless coverage, supporting programs such as BYOD, STEAM, Design thinking labs, and gamified LMS. Every classroom is equipped with an interactive board to enhance classroom learning. Teachers have access to a laptop for mobility and other various technologies. 
Supporting all these classroom educational resources is a highly sophisticated network center featuring multiple servers, wireless controller, firewall, and content filtering system. Our content filtering system along with other security measures ensure CIPA compliance providing a safe and educationally-focused environment. Aside from the network upgrades, the school has also upgraded the phone system, door access control, and video surveillance system.

Our students participate in a comprehensive approach to education with involvement in the science fair, computer education programs, vocational awareness sessions. Classes related to the Holocaust, Amistad, Black History, Women's History, Veterans’ Day and United Nations Day express the cultural diversity found within our school district. Students in grade eight are able to take advance courses in Geometry, Spanish I, Introduction to Physical Science and receive high school credits. Extra-curricular activities include girls' and boys' basketball, volleyball, track and field, cross country, intramurals, power of choice activities, Rebel2, Think Day team, band, choir, boys' soccer, girl's field hockey, walk and talk club, newspaper club, future engineer's club, chess club, National Junior Honor Society, peer assistant leadership club, Builder's Club, yearbook, Student Council, Renaissance program activities.

School community participation includes the PTO, Mothers’ League, Kiwanis, Family Association of Northfield (FAN) as well as other civic organizations that showcase a city-wide pride of Northfield.

We continue to offer quality education programs and Northfield can continue to take pride in saying, "we are a district second to none."
